The Brief History of the Seven Great Clans:
The Seven Great Clans of Wicca are seven legendary witch covens--Brightendale, Burnhide, Leapvaughn, Rowanwand, Vikroth, Woodbane, and Wyndenkell--from whom all blood witches descend.
After several centuries of practicing magick independently, the Clans unite to form a single domain of witchcraft. However, a war soon erupts between the Clans which lasts for over a thousand years. Around the era of the Burning Times, a mysterious cataclysm kills 95% of the witches. The surviving members of the Clans fell into a Dark Age, in which they continued their lineage by marrying other Clan members or humans.
In modern times, one's Clan lineage is almost entirely meaningless, though many still distrust Woodbanes. For their part, many Woodbanes earn this distrust by practicing dark magick and attempting to gain dominance over the rest of the Clans. However, there are also many Woodbanes who use their power only for good.
A Breakdown of the Seven Clans:
The Brightendales are one of the Seven Great Clans of Wicca. They were historically medical healers and worked with plants.
The Burnhides are one of the Seven Great Clans of Wicca. Burnhides were experts in gems, crystals, and metal magick. The clan mostly settled in Germany years ago but since have spread out. A typical Burnhide has white hair (from premature greying) and dark eyes (but not all Burnhides have this appearance).
The Leapvaughns are one of the Seven Great Clans of Wicca. They are the most humorous and mischievous of the Great Clans. They usually have red hair (but not always) and the word "leprechaun" derives from them.
The Rowanwands are one of the Seven Great Clans of Wicca. They were considered the good clan (out of all the seven) and wrote the first Book of Shadows. They were known for their magickal knowledge about spells and properties of magick. The Woodbanes were their greatest enemies, and Rowanwands and warred with them for thousands of years.
The Vikroths were one of the Seven Great Clans of Wicca. They were related to the Vikings and considered warriors.
The Wyndenkells were one of the Seven Great Clans of Wicca. They were expert spell writers
The Woodbanes are one of the Seven Great Clans of Wicca. The darkest of all the clans, the Woodbanes are famous for the use of dark magick, forbidden practices, and the ability to do evil. Woodbanes for thousands of years were at war with the Rowanwand clan (a clan that practiced good magick). All Woodbanes can be identified with a birthmark called a Woodbane athame, shaped like a Wiccan ritual dagger.
